Vintage T-Shirt Design Portfolio |Since the 1970s – Dean Walker San Jose
This collection showcases vintage and retro t-shirt designs created in San Jose, California—many dating back to the 1970s, long before computers changed the design industry. These pieces represent not only graphic design work, but a visual record of local businesses, culture, and history. As I put this portfolio together, what stood out most is how many of these designs are tied to businesses and people who are no longer with us. What remains is the artwork—each piece telling a story from a different time in San Jose’s creative and commercial life. There are three ways to view this work: artistic value, historical significance, and the technical process behind early screen printing.
Every design in this section was created entirely by hand. Each color was drawn as a separate piece of artwork, then combined during the printing process— without seeing the final result until it came off the press. At the time, most printing was limited to four colors, which required creative problem-solving to achieve a full range of tones and visual impact. This was an era of bold, attention-grabbing design. Clients wanted graphics that stood out—sometimes edgy, sometimes humorous—but always memorable. It was a different time in advertising and apparel, driven by creativity, experimentation, and hands-on craftsmanship. Some of my earliest work has yet to be digitized, but it still exists—and will be added to this collection over time. What you’re looking at here isn’t just a portfolio. It’s a piece of San Jose design history.
